Learning with Your SCPO

The All Wales School Liaison Core Programme is a series of lessons that span Foundation Phase to Key Stage 4 (pupils age 5–16 years) raising awareness of community issues and promoting crime prevention. These messages are delivered by School Community Police Officers (SCPO).

The Programme is a spiral scheme of work with each lesson being age appropriate with up to date contents building on the previous one. The lesson matrix shows the extent of the Programme available to schools. Follow up work for teachers on these topics is also available in the teachers section.

As part of the Programme personal safety is a key issue. Certain lessons deal directly with the topic while others have it embedded as an intrinsic element within it.

Foundation Phase - People Who Help Us (5–7 year olds): The pupils learn about who can help us, about the role of the Police and other emergency services by identifying pictures of emergency scenarios and who to contact for help. When do we call 999? Using ’Sara’s Story’ and the ‘Jack’s Day’ DVD to reinforce the message of what is an emergency and who can help us, through role play in the classroom.

Foundation – Safe Haven (5 to 7 year olds): This lesson sensitively introduces the concept of domestic abuse. Through the use of role-play, story time and other interactive activities, it helps children explore and understand difficult emotions. The lesson also highlights the importance of talking to a trusted adult if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Lower Key Stage 2 Friend or Foe (7–9 year olds): The lesson raises awareness with pupils that it’s not possible to tell what a person is like just by their appearance. It helps identify potentially dangerous situations and explores coping strategies. A short DVD called Anwen’s Story highlights the importance of talking to a trusted adult if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Upper Key Stage 2: The Right to Be Safe (9–11 year olds): This lesson focuses on all children and young peoples' right to feel safe. Through class activities and group work pupils are asked to consider various safe and unsafe situations, how risks can be reduced, and who they can turn to if they need help or support.

Key Stage 3 - Personal Safety (11–14 year olds): The lesson raises awareness of risk situations and potential dangers that young people may face in their everyday lives and social life. Also to recognise factors affecting personal safety and to develop a responsible attitude towards making decisions and devise strategies for taking action in regards to personal safety.

Key Stage 3 - Hidden Hurt (11–14 year olds): Pupils learn what makes a safe relationship, and identify and understand the five types of domestic abuse. They are made aware of what can be done. Also to raise awareness of the support agencies which are available for victim and perpetrator The SCPO will show film clips - pupils then discuss situations, images shown and also key words and how to identify warning signs.

Key Stage 4 - Dangerous Deception (14–16 year olds): Based on a real life event, a DVD is used to describe the story of a girl called Lucy who is groomed by a man who contacted her on the Internet, posing as a model agency. Lucy soon becomes a victim of sexual exploitation. Using discussion and interactive activities the lesson focuses on identifying the early warning signs that all is not well and encourages pupils to discover opportunities to make positive choices and keep safe.

Key Stage 4 - No Means No (14–16 years old): This lesson introduces the concept of consent and develops strategies to empower young people to understand sexual consent. Pupils watch a DVD clip to trigger group discussion around sexual consent, the law and its consequences and explore scenarios to enable them to make informed decisions. The lesson also highlights local and national support agencies.
