General Info

Rohypnol is a tranquilliser described by the media as a 'date rape' drug. It is used medically for the short-term treatment of sleep disorders. It is alleged that on occasions these tablets have been put into females’ drinks causing them to either become unconscious or experience short-term memory loss making them vulnerable to sexual exploitation and rape. Companies now sell products such as strips or beer mats, which can be used discretely to test for the benzodiazepine group of drugs most commonly associated with Drug Rape.

Effects

• Sedation by depressing the nervous system and ‘slowing’ the brain and body down.
• Relief of tension and anxiety, helping the user to feel calm and relaxed.
• Help with insomnia.

Risks

• Rohypnol use causes dependence in humans.
• Abstention can cause withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting decreased concentration, muscle pain, tremors, anxiety, tension,  and depression..
• Numbness, tingling of the extremities, loss of identity, hallucinations, delirium, convulsions, shock, and cardiovascular collapse also may occur.
• Withdrawal seizures can occur a week or more after cessation of use. Treatment for dependence must be gradual, with use tapering off.
