Can young people get into trouble if they are caught with NPS?

Young people can be arrested for being in possession of a new psychoactive substances (NPS), formerly called NEDs. In many instances it is very difficult to determine what a controlled substance is and what a NPS is. It is important that young people are aware that if they are caught by the Police in possession of an unknown substance an arrest will be made. The drug will then be tested to determine what it is. Although the young person will be released if the drug is found to be currently legal to possess the arrest will remain on the young person’s record. This would show in any future CRB checks conducted by an employer, and so is not something to be taken lightly.
