Learning with Your SCPO

The All Wales School Liaison Core Programme is a series of lessons that span Foundation Phase to Key Stage 4 (pupils age 5–16 years) raising awareness of community issues and promoting crime prevention. These messages are delivered by School Community Police Officers (SCPOs).

The Programme is a spiral scheme of work with each lesson being age appropriate with up to date contents building on the previous one. The lesson matrix shows the extent of the Programme available to schools. Follow-up work for teachers on these topics is also available in the teachers section. 

As part of the Programme alcohol awareness is a key issue. Certain lessons deal directly with the topic while others have it embedded as an intrinsic element within it. The lessons are described below:

Lower Key Stage 2 TASK Force (7–9 year olds)

Through a fun cookery demonstration, pupils improve their knowledge of tobacco, alcohol and solvents.

Upper Key Stage 2 So! What’s the Problem? (9–11 year olds)

Pupils discover the harmful effects of misusing alcohol and solvents. A DVD clip stimulates discussion about anti-social behaviour, binge drinking and its effects on the community. Information is given on where to go for help.

Key Stage 3 Alcohol - Think About Drink! (11–14 year olds)

A board game and DVD extract challenges the pupil's knowledge about alcohol and the law and the ways in which alcohol can affect your behaviour. Pupils are given positive safety messages and guidance with information about help lines

Key Stage 4 Alcohol - Double Trouble! (14 -16 year olds)

Pupils are encouraged to consider the effects of alcohol misuse. Emotive DVD clips explore the consequences of alcohol misuse. Pupils then consider how to reduce the risk to their personal safety and are offered guidance on where to go for help.
